[TechMeetup] Interest in starting a Fife meetup ?

(Andrew MacCormack) #1

I’m interested in getting together folks in the Fife (Dunfermline/Dalgety Bay/Kirkcaldy) area for some kind of tech meetup and wanted to pick the brains on here: there seems to be a dearth of Fife events, so not sure how much interest there would be but my company is keen to help by providing hosting and pizza of an evening.

So, what do you recommend to get started and find people who might be interested?

The only real way to find out who is interested is by seeing who turns up on the night. Online posts about a willingness to attend are pretty meaningless.

You have done a lot of the hard work, ie found a location and a sponsor, getting speakers is also tricky, though there are a few people around who will happily give a talk if asked. All you need to do now, is publicise your event as widely as you can, OpenTechCalendar etc, and see who turns up on the night.

ps Anyone who says “build it and they will come” is misquoting Field of Dreams.

This might be wrong but my impression is that people who live in Fife but work in Edinburgh will just go to Edinburgh events and take a later train/bus/drive. That leaves people who who work in Fife, which is pretty scattered geographically in comparison to Edinburgh. This means making the event start later than most so that people can travel back from Edinburgh or towns in Fife.

I believe Marius is also going to get us set up on Meetup.com and you will be welcome to piggyback our account as when we discussed it, Marius was in favour of doing that sort of thing
